Abstract

Glomerulonephritis is a term used to express the endocapillary proliferation and inflammation of the renal glomerulus, which clinically it can manifest itself in numerous ways and even remain asymptomatic. Multiple mechanisms are found in its etiology, such as the participation of microorganisms and parasites, although the autoimmune mechanism is noteworthy, in which several components of the immune system are identified, including the complement system. An example of this last mechanism is glomerulonephritis secondary to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which has been the subject of research in recent years, and in which important advances have been made in the discovery of new molecules involved in the etiopathogenic process. This has managed to open a door to new therapies that reduce mortality and improve the quality of life. The pathophysiology, clinical, diagnosis, prognosis and treatments, including emerging ones, have been reviewed in terms of glomerulonephritis with emphasis on lupus glomerulonephritis and other glomerulonephritis with an equally autoimmune mechanism.
